Kochi, Aug. 21 With the concurrence given by the shipping lines to move long-standing import boxes from the container terminal to the private container freight station (CFS), the terminal operator, DP World, is taking all-out measures to bring back normalcy inside the terminal.

Mr Elvis D’cruz, Terminal Manager, DP World, Kochi, told Business Line that the company has made temporary arrangements with Falcon Infrastructures, Pace CFS and Concor Yard for the shifting of import consignments piled up in the terminal at the earliest to ease congestion.

The company will move around 1,000 teus to Falcon CFS at Kalamassery and 300 teus each to Pace and Concor in the next two days. All the raw cashew imports will be stacked in the Concor yard and Pace CFS at Aroor because of the proximity to the cashew processing centres at Kollam.

‘Breathing time’

The cargo, which is a mixture of both export and import consignments, is piled up in the terminal as the vessel rotation has not been on schedule in the last few days, he said, adding that the terminal is currently having 6,000 plus teus awaiting clearance.

He pointed out that the permission given by the lines to shift imported cargo to private CFS will also help ease congestion and achieve normalcy in the terminal in 10 days’ time. “By moving the entire cargo, we will get breathing time to have a smooth traffic and normal cargo handling operations in the terminal,” he said.

Moreover, the CFS companies had also extended additional free days for the storage of containers as part of offering incentives, he added.
