Tea India may gain on tight Tanzania tea supplies P.S. Sundar Coonoor, Aug. 21 Pakistan, which faces difficulty in obtaining the required volume of Kenyan teas at affordable prices in the wake of the 21 per cent fall in Kenya’s production in the first half, is finding Tanzanian supplies also tightening, thereby necessitating more intake from India. Pakistan, along with UK and European countries, has been importing Tanzanian teas. Some Tanzanian teas are also sold through Kenya’s Mombassa auctions. But due to cold snap and poor rainfall, Tanzanian production has fallen in the first half, thereby reducing export availability. “Between January and June 2008, Tanzania produced 18,457 tonnes. This was 2,221 tonnes lower than the production in the first half of 2007. So, the country has lost 10.74 per cent in the first half. In 2007, Tanzania produced 34,951 tonnes,” Mr Rajesh Gupta, Director, Global Tea Brokers, told Business Line. Fill the gapsBut, the Tanzanian Tea Board has taken steps to augment production by 59 per cent in the next five years. The aim is to produce 55,500 tonnes by 2013.
