Maharashtra tops in cashew output, yield

The US continued to be the biggest export destination for Indian cashew, accounting for close to 35 per cent of India’s total exports

Our Bureau

Kochi, Aug. 21 India had 8.68 lakh hectares under cashew cultivation in 2007-08 and produced 6.65 lakh tonnes of raw cashew nuts with average productivity being 860 kg a hectare.

However, there was much disparity among the States in area under the crop, production and productivity.

Maximum area

Maharashtra was the top producer in the country accounting for over 30 per cent of the total production at 2.10 lakh tonnes and the highest productivity at 1,500 kg a hectare.

Though Andhra Pradesh had the maximum area under the crop, its productivity at 900 kg a hectare was far lower than that of Maharashtra, pulling down its total production.

While the country exported 30,578 tonnes of cashew kernels from the country and realised Rs 779 crore during the first three months of the current fiscal, Kerala continued to be the biggest processor and producer of cashew nuts.

While there was a nominal increase in the quantity of exports, a sharp 30 per cent increase in unit value realisation resulted in a jump in the total value realised. Over 60 per cent of the total export was undertaken through the Cochin Port in Kerala during the first three months of the current fiscal.

While 18,901 tonnes of cashew kernel valued at Rs 488 crore were exported through the Cochin Port, the Tuticorin Port accounted for 7,326 tonnes valued at Rs 176 crore and Mangalore Port accounted for 3,029 tonnes valued at Rs 82 crore. Visakhapatanam and Goa were the other ports through which smaller export quantities were executed.

Cochin Port also accounted for the biggest import of raw cashew nuts into the country.

Export destinations

The US continued to be the biggest export destination for Indian cashew, accounting for close to 35 per cent of India’s total exports. Exports to the US were of the order of 11,008 tonnes, valued at Rs 217 crore.

The Netherlands was another significant export destination accounting for over 15 per cent of the total exports. Netherlands accounted for 4,569 tonnes valued at Rs 120 crore.

The UAE accounted for 2,540 tonnes valued at Rs 67 crore, Japan with 1,475 tonnes valued at Rs 39 crore and UK with 1,204 tonnes valued at Rs 31 crore were the other major export destinations during the first three months of the current fiscal.
