Nikon aims to capture more of compact, DSLR markets

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 21 Nikon India on Thursday said it is aiming to increase its market share in India to 10 per cent and 40 per cent in the compact and Digital SLR camera segments respectively, by 2010. It plans to achieve this by expanding distribution reach, increasing its service centres and enhancing product awareness through marketing activities.

“At present, our market share in India is 5 per cent in the mass-market compact segment, and 30 per cent in the DSLR space targeted at professional photographers. We expect that by 2010, we will be able to expand this to 10 per cent for compact, and 40 per cent for DSLR range,” Mr Prashant K. Singh, Marketing Head (Imaging Products), Nikon India, said.

He said that Nikon — which set up a wholly owned subsidiary in India last year — is looking to expand its distribution reach through existing distributors. “We are currently present in 300-400 outlets across India and we hope to be in 1,000 outlets in the next one year. In addition, we are also looking at increasing the number of service centres to 10 in the next two months and 20 in 2009,” he said. Nikon currently has six service centres in locations such as Mumbai, Delhi, Gurgaon, Chennai and Kolkata.

D700 launch

The company on Thursday announced the launch of D700 Digital SLR camera featuring 12.1 effective mega-pixel Nikon FX Format senor, that measures 23.9 X 36 mm. The price tag for the product is estimated at Rs 1.80 lakh.

Besides this, the company also launched five new COOLPIX digital cameras aimed at making photography easier. “New to the COOLPIX product line and present in each of the new cameras is the Scene Auto Selector Mode, which automatically selects the right scene mode while shooting,” he said, adding that the new COOLPIX models would hit the market mid-September.
