GSM operators agree to provide links to RCom

New Delhi, Aug. 21 The interconnection row between Reliance Communications and GSM players has been settled amicably with all the existing operators agreeing to offer links.

The issue was resolved on Thursday at a closed door meeting between the two sides. The meeting was initiated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

While Idea Cellular had already opened up its network for interconnecting with Reliance, other operators, including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar, have also agreed to offer the links. Earlier, the telecom regulator had said that operators whodo not offer interconnection to Reliance Communications by August 21, will have to face action.

After the meeting, Mr T.V. Ramachandran, Director General, Cellular Operators Association of India, said, “We are happy that we are moving towards a resolution under the good offices of TRAI on the matter in a fair and equitable manner. Since there seems to be all-round efforts to resolve the issue, there is no need of going to TDSAT over the matter.”

GSM operators had earlier threatened to defy the telecom regulator’s directive to give links to Reliance Communications by August 21. GSM players, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular, had taken a stance that the TRAI’s order was misplaced as RCom’s GSM network was new and, therefore, the commercial terms of the interconnection have to be renegotiated. TRAI, however, issued a directive asking the GSM operators, including BSNL, to offer links to Reliance Communications.

With interconnection in place, Reliance Communications will now be able to start commercial services as it means that a Reliance GSM subscriber would be able to call any of the 200 million GSM subscribers belonging to the existing operators across the country. RCom had recently announced a soft launch of its GSM services in Delhi for some of its employees.
