Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 21

The State Cabinet has approved the report on the restructuring of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) prepared by a committee constituted for the purpose and headed by the Secretary for Power.

The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, told newspersons after a Cabinet meeting on Thursday that the Power Department had been entrusted to take the necessary steps to implement the recommendations contained in the committee’s report.

As per the report, the board will be converted into a company and reforms will be carried out in the power sector. However, the company will remain in the public sector.

Referring to the fuel surcharge imposed by KSEB on the consumers, the Chief Minister said that it was necessitated by the crisis in the power sector in the wake of weak monsoon rains. The Government was unable to provide any subsidy to the board to tide over the crisis, he added.

In reply to a question, he said that the question of giving permission for establishing special economic zones (SEZs) in the State would be referred to the central leadership of CPI(M) and would also be discussed with the partners within the ruling Left Democratic Front.
