‘Power situation may improve soon’

Our Bureau

Tiruchi, Aug. 22

The power situation in Tamil Nadu would improve once the monsoon turns active and the current shortage was just a “transient phase”, said the Chief Secretary, Mr L.K. Tripathy.

“We are looking for an improvement in power generation in the hydel stations soon as the monsoon has picked up over the past 15 days,” he told reporters here on Friday.

Asked whether the power holiday in the State would come to an end soon, he said, “We hope so.”

Attributing the shortage to monsoon failure, Mr Tripathy observed that Tamil Nadu was better off than most States. There have been difficulties in getting power from the national grid and other places. However, the Government was meeting the crisis in the best possible ways.

The Chief Secretary attributed the delay in the take-off of the Information Technology Park at Tiruchi to the slowdown in the IT industry due to the recession in the US. But there has been a good response from IT companies to the Tiruchi Park and it would come up soon, he said.

The land required for the expansion of the Tiruchi airport has been identified and a technical problem, posed by the presence of an irrigation canal, has been sorted out, he said in response to a question.
