Cars Government - States Corporate - New Projects
Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 23 With the Tatas’ Nano project hanging in the balance, West Bengal’s loss could well be a gain for other States. A day after Mr Ratan Tata’s threat to move out of Singur in West Bengal following protests and violent incidents at the factory premises, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra have offered land and facilities for the plant if it were to be relocated. Punjab and Orissa also hinted at rolling out the red carpet for the ambitious Rs 1-lakh car project. Andhra Pradesh is also among the potential suitors. In Uttarakhand, Tata Motors already has a facility and produces its Ace trucks. The State is among the front runners as an alternative location; the State Government has said it is ready to provide all facilities at its Pantnagar industrial estate. Tata Motors had earlier indicated that its existing facility could be used for producing the Nano. The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, said “The Tatas will be accorded a red carpet welcome to set up the project in Maharashtra and will be given land and necessary facilities.” Punjab offered land and all possible facilities with an eye on the opportunity to house several auto ancillary units as well. Orissa too said it would be willing to host the project if the company approached them, despite the history of several large-scale projects hanging fire due to protests in the State, including Tata Steel’s Kalinga Nagar venture. We may pull out of Singur if protests continue: Ratan Tata Singur plant project will continue, says Bengal Industry Minister Nano suppliers also to pull out if Tatas shift from Singur More Stories on : Cars | States | New Projects | Tata Motors Ltd
