Shipping/Ports Lawsuit over price fixing Asian shippers threaten lawsuit over price fixing, says a report in the Lloyd’s List. The shippers say they are ready to take the shipping lines to court should operators collectively fix prices in China, where a new antitrust law came into force from August 1. The Chairman of Asian Shippers Council, Mr John Lu, has been quoted as saying that the newly enacted antitrust law in China should take precedence over maritime regulations that allow shipping lines to fix rat es collectively. However, there is at the moment no authoritative answer as to which law prevails and the council hopes that the Chinese Government will clarify the law and declare the shipping cartel illegal. The advantage of China is that it is a huge exporter with insufficient ships and therefore relying on international shipping lines. But it is also keen to protect its shippers and therefore, unlike many other countries, has made no block exemption to shipping conferences. The China Shippers Association has already sounded out the Government and the members of ASC, according to Mr Lu, have supported it. OUR BUREAU More Stories on : Shipping/Ports
