Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug. 24 Software companies have taken to organising various international contests with attractive prizes in an effort to woo India’s IT developer community, encouraging them to stretch their skills.

The President and Chief Executive of Skyway Software, Mr Sean Walsh, told Business Line that through the Skyway Cup 2008, a developer contest is aimed at encouraging developers to work on rich internet applications (RIA).

Speaking over phone from the US, Mr Walsh recently said Indian software developers stand to win $25,000 through the cup as the first prize, followed by other awards.

Indian participation

While the contest is open to several other countries, we expect keen participation from India, which is home to one of the most diverse developer communities.

“The company’s Skyway software builder community thrives on building RIAs using Skyway Builder and we expect Indian developers too will get into this mode,” he said.

CYPRESS

Semiconductor designer Cypress announced ‘India Design Challenge’, a multi-disciplinary contest open to engineering students in India.

The contest intends students to stretch their imagination to develop novel ways to utilise Cypress design tools and technology.

The winning student design team will receive first prize of Rs 1 lakh. Ten runners up will receive Rs 5,000 each.

In a statement, the Cypress University’s Alliance Programme Director, Mr Patrick Kane, said as future technology leaders, India’s engineering students have a lot to gain by working with Cypress system on chip solution.

Similar contests were initiated for gaming enthusiast and software developers by other companies.
