CIFT designs fibreglass boats for fishermen in Rajasthan

Kochi Aug. 24

The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) has designed fibreglass reinforced plastic boats, which are to be introduced into the lakes and water bodies in Rajasthan for pursuing inland fisheries in the State.

These boats are expected to replace the traditional wood and iron boats of diverse sizes and design used currently. While the productive life of these traditional boats were restricted due to rusting and decay, the new boats are expected to have a considerably longer lifespan.

A survey conducted jointly by a team of scientist from CIFT, the College of Fisheries of the Maharana Pratap University and the Government of Rajasthan’s Department of Fisheries revealed that the existing boats were not economical and suggested the introduction of fibreglass boats which are more durable and economical. The survey was conducted mainly among the tribal fishermen of Jaisamand Lake in Rajasthan.

The flat-bottomed fibreglass boats were designed by a naval architect, Mr M. Naser, Principal Scientist at CIFT, and have a length of 4.06 metres, breadth of 1.38 metres and depth of 0.55 metres and are much bigger than the traditional boats used for fisheries in the lakes of Rajasthan.

There are provisions for fixing an outboard motor on these boats. The main material components for construction of the boats are the glass reinforcements and resins.

The tribal fishermen of Jaisamand Lake have been given training in the fabrication of fibreglass fishing boats so that they can take it up as a regular activity in future.

The entry of these fibreglass boats into the lakes of Rajasthan would be the second after their successful introduction into the North Eastern state by CIFT.

The boat has a guaranteed lifespan of 30 years.
