Variety - Wildlife
Forest zone

– K. Murali Kumar

Visitors freely trespass into the Bandipur National Park forest zone around the Himada Gopalswamy Betta peak, which is 1,454 metres above the sea level. Pilgrims to an old Gopalaswamy temple on the peak and tourists from Bangalore and Mysore during the weekends freely roam the area with no forest officials present to regulate them. Herds of wild elephants are regularly seen around this peak. A lake at the base of the peak serves as a watering hole for wild animals. Bandipur National Park is contiguous to Madhumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu to the south and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala to the south-west. To the north-west lies Nagarhole National Park.
