Vinayak Mangalore, Aug. 25 In its efforts to boost the cultivation of sandalwood, the Karnataka Forest Department is now focusing on identifying new plots for development apart from conserving the naturally grown trees. The department has taken steps to identify around 100 hectares in various places in the State. Dr Sundar Naik, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Karnataka, told Business Line that the Karnataka Budget for 2008-09 has earmarked Rs 2 crore for sandalwood development in the State, and the department has identified various regions in Shimoga, Hassan, Haveri, Dharwad and Bangalore districts for the cultivation of sandalwood. Stating that cultivation of sandalwood requires immediate attention as there is a decline in its production in the State, he said the department has identified around 100 hectares in Shikaripura, Ambigola and Shiralkoppa regions in Shimoga district; Jarakabande, Doresaniplaya and Adugodi regions in Bangalore; Ramadevara Halla region in Hassan district; Dundasi in Haveri; and Gungarakatti in Dharwad district for the development of sandalwood plantations. 5-year schemeThe department is contemplating a five-year scheme for the development of new sandalwood plantations in various parts in the State. Saplings will be planted in the places of dead plants in the existing sandalwood plantations of the department. In addition to this, naturally grown sandalwood tees in forests will be protected and developed. To a query on the issues related to felling and theft of sandalwood trees, Dr Naik said that a 24-hour watch-and-ward has been planned. Staff in watch-and-ward will be provided with arms and walkie-talkies. Proper fencing would be taken up around such plantations. Mr Naik said that some districts have good potential for the cultivation of sandalwood. Plans are also there to distribute sandalwood saplings for public in such districts from the next year, he added. More Stories on : Cultivation | Horticulture/Fruits & Vegetables | Karnataka
