Steel States - West Bengal Buddhadeb calls for more downstream steel units Our Bureau Kolkata, Aug. 25 The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said on Monday that the setting up of downstream units in the steel sector would help create jobs for the unemployed youth in the country. This was especially important since big steel plants no longer engage people in as large numbers as earlier. Addressing a seminar, “Opportunities in the downstream sector in the steel industry”, organised here by the Confederation of Indian Industry (Eastern Region), Mr Bhattacharjee said economic growth in India – as also in other third world countries – had not led to the creation of jobs. Instead, there has been “jobless growth”. New capacitiesHe said new steel capacities were being set up in West Bengal by, among others, Jindal Steel, Jai Balaji group, Videocon and Bhushan. Only 3-4 companies were currently engaged in the manufacture of downstream steel products, he said, and urged the industry to set up more such downstream units that would help in the creation of jobs. Mr Bhattacharjee reiterated his demand for a national policy on iron ore. This would go a long way in ensuring that steel plants located in States that do not have iron ore reserves do have access to the crucial raw material.
