P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Aug 26 More sunshine hours with adequate precipitation and optimum humidity levels helped Nilgiri tea production to rise in July over the same period last year.

According to UPASI Tea Research Foundation, production in its member estates rose 5.8 per cent over July 2007.

Production totalled 1.2 million kg (mkg) against 1.14 mkg in July 2007 and five-year mean of 1.16 mkg. Compared to last year, production rose in all agro-climatic zones except Kullakamby.

January-July cumulative production was 9.3 mkg against 7.5 mkg in the same months last year and five-year mean of 8.39 mkg.

According to the Foundation, tea pockets received useful rains in the second fortnight of July but the spread for the month as a whole was mixed. Kotagiri was the only agro-zone where mentionably higher rainfall was received in July – 8.9 cms against 6.6 cms in July 2007. Udhagamandalam got a tad more – 25.4 cms against 25.3 cms. Rainfall declined in Coonoor – 7.4 cms against 8 cms in July 2007. Kundah’s rainfall was mentionably lower at 17 cms against 29.5 cms. Kullakamby recorded only 3.3 cms against 7.8 cms.

For the month of July, compared with the average rainfall of the last ten years, only Coonoor and Kotagiri recorded a higher rainfall. The decennial average in Coonoor was 6.3 cms and Kotagiri 8.5 cms.
