Our Bureau Kolkata, Aug 27 Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) is to utilise the Freight Operations Information System (FOIS) of Indian Railways for monitoring the movement of its incoming and outgoing rail freight traffic, according to SAIL sources. The Web-enabled system, developed and customised for SAIL by the Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) under the Ministry of Railways, was formally launched on Wednesday by Mr V.K. Gulhati, Director (Technical), SAIL, and was put in operational use for all SAIL plants and units simultaneously for providing on-line information about incoming raw material wagon/trains starting from the loading points to destinations and movement of finished products from the plants to stockyards and customers. The system is to improve synergy between the loading and receiving points by providing real time information to users. It will also provide information on the loading details of the entire incoming and outbound freight trains to and from SAIL plants, their pipeline positions, freight payment details and wagon status including detention. This should help plants plan in advance their rail transportation needs, the sources add. It might be noted that RITES Ltd has already undertaken detailed studies and feasibility reports on upgradation of internal railway systems for various SAIL plants to meet their projected future requirements.
