Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather Fresh rain belt swings in over south peninsula
Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 27 The southern peninsula has started receiving rains from a fresh wave and the latest forecasts suggest that the wet spell would later spread along the west coast as well. The facilitating east to west shear zone of monsoon turbulence has been established across the extreme south peninsula with embedded upper air cyclonic circulations over Tamil Nadu and south Coastal Karnataka. Under its influence, fairly widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy falls has been forecast over extreme south peninsula during the next two days, according to an India Meteorological Department (IMD) update. VIGOROUS MONSOONDuring the 24 hours endingWednesday morning, the monsoon was vigorous over South Tamil Nadu and active over South Interior Karnataka. Rainfall occurred at most places over South Interior Karnataka, at many places over South Tamil Nadu and at a few places over North Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema and Kerala. Isolated rains were reported from Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Coastal and North Interior Karnataka. Among the stations recording very heavy to heavy rainfall (in cm) during this period are: Tiruchi Airport-16; Thali-11; Madakasira (Ananthapur) and Palacode (Dharmapuri)-9 each; Alangudi, Pudukottai, Maniyachchi (Tuticorin), Krishnagiri, Dharapuram and Mettupatti-8 each; and Bangalore, Chikkanahalli (Tumkur), Rayachoti and Rajampet, Arandangi (Pudukottai), Hosur, Sholavandan and Vadipatti-7 each. Forecast for the next two days said rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep. ACTIVE IN GUJARATOver West-central India, the monsoon was active over Gujarat. Rainfall occurred at many places over Konkan–Goa, at a few places over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada and at isolated places over Saurashtra and Kutch. Heavy to very heavy rain was reported from Idar-4, Karjan-10, Broach-8, Jambugoda, Bhiloda, Himatnagar, Padra and Mangrol-7 each. Forecasts suggested rain or thundershowers for many places over Konkan-Goa and Gujarat region and at a few places over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, Saurashtra and Kutch. The feeble trough of low pressure off the Kerala coast persisted. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting sees the trough strengthening progressively to spin up a ‘low’, which would move north later to drive rains along the coast. MAY SUSTAINConsensus model predictions indicate that the outgoing long-wave radiation (OLR, the terrestrial radiation escaping into space) would be in the negative territory along the coast during the first week of September. Negative OLR values are indicative of persisting cloud cover, which traps the radiation in the atmosphere. On Wednesday, the land-based monsoon trough stayed dry-docked and passed through Ferozepur, Karnal, Shahjahanpur, Bhagalpur, Malda and eastwards into Manipur through Bangladesh. An upper air cyclonic circulation hung over West Uttar Pradesh and neighbourhood. Under this scenario, the IMD forecast fairly widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Bihar during the next four days. Scattered rainfall activity is also likely over Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh during the next 24 hours. East India could hope for some respite from the incessant rains and flooding after this spell only. More Stories on : Climate & Weather | Climate & Weather
