Horticulture/Fruits & Vegetables States - Tamil Nadu Onion prices will go up in Oct-Nov: TNAU Our Bureau Coimbatore, Aug. 27 The Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is advising farmers to store the small onions for now and release the produce in October-November to get better rates. The produce is currently quoting between Rs 6 and Rs 11/kg depending on quality. The DEMIC study has revealed that it would hover around Rs 8-15/kg over the next three months. “Delayed monsoon, falling minimum export price (MEP) and reduced arrivals from Karnataka would push the rates further. If there is rainfall in Palladam, Tirupur, Perambalur and Erode during harvest, it is likely to increase beyond Rs 15/kg. Farmers are, therefore, advised to store the produce and take advantage of the anticipated rise in rates,” Dr N. Raveendran, Professor and Project Coordinator and Ms P. Murugananthi, Senior Research Fellow of DEMIC, said. The MEP has ranged between $360 and $520 a tonne for the Bangalore Rose onion. “This month it rose by about 20 per cent. Though the prices increased, the Union Government reduced the MEP from $450/tonne in July to $360/tonne in August, to encourage export of small onions. This is expected to push the price upward in the domestic market,” he said. Tamil Nadu has produced 2.77 lakh tonnes of onions in 2007-08. Small onions account for over 75 per cent of this production. More Stories on : Horticulture/Fruits & Vegetables | Exports & Imports | Agricultural Institutions | Tamil Nadu
