Southern rain wave gains more ground

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 28

Monsoon has been active over interior Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka as the renewed spell in the south peninsula gained further ground on Thursday.

The Met Centre, Chennai, said in an update that rainfall occurred at most places over south interior Karnataka, at many places over interior Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, north interior Karnataka and at a few places over Rayalaseema.

Isolated rainfall occurred over coastal Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala and coastal Karnataka. These rains are expected to make some dent in the deficit in the South, which has prominently got reflected in the all-India rain figures so far this season.

The following stations recorded heavy rainfall (in cm) during the 24 hours ending Thursday morning: Alur and Hassan-11 each; Kanekal and Thondebhavi-10 each; Salem, Valparai and Madurai-9 each; Belur, C.N. Halli and Gubbi-8 each and Attur, Mayanur, and Kunigal-7 each.

HEAVY RAINS SEEN

Wednesday’s cyclonic circulation over Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood lay over north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema, but at lower levels, indicating raised potency. Fairly widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy falls is being forecast for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, south Karnataka and Rayalaseema during the next two days.

The ongoing spell is forecast by various models to sustain in varying intensities over Kerala, south Tamil Nadu and the west coast, before taking a swipe over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, Vidarbha and Telengana over the next week or so.

According to the US-based Centre for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies, rains may linger over Kerala and extend in a north-northeast direction to coastal Karnataka, north interior Karnataka, parts of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Up to 300 to 400 per cent above the weekly average of rainfall is expected to fall over the southern fringes of Kerala and Tamil Nadu over the seven days ending September 4, the forecast said.

According to the Met Centre, Chennai, rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over interior Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep and coastal and south interior Karnataka and at a few places over Rayalaseema and north interior Karnataka during the next two days.

Isolated rain or thundershowers are likely over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

MUTED IN WEST-CENTRAL

But the monsoon was rather muted over West-central India, with rainfall being reported from only isolated places over the North Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat. The weather was mainly dry over South Konkan-Goa and Marathawada.

Forecast for the next two days indicated that rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places over Konkan-Goa and at isolated places over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada and Gujarat.

An India Meteorological Department update said that the land-based monsoon trough had nestled itself fully along the foothills of the Himalayas on Thursday. The previous day’s upper air cyclonic circulation over West Uttar Pradesh and neighbourhood persisted.

Under this scenario, widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next four days. Fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Bihar during the next two days.
