Coonoor tea sales see rise in dust offerings

Coonoor, Aug. 28 A volume of 3.15 lakh kgs has been catalogued for the dust sale of the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) to be held on Friday. Last week, 3.10 lakh kgs were offered.

Of the 3.15 lakh kgs, orthodox teas comprise only 0.41 lakh kgs. CTC teas account for the bulk of 2.74 lakh kgs.

This, together with the offer of 7.94 lakh kgs of leaf, took the total volume for Sale No 35 this week to 11.09 lakh kgs. This was 29,000 kgs more than last week’s offer. This time last year, only 9.57 lakh kgs had been offered.

In the leaf counter, orthodox teas accounted for 0.26 lakh kgs, while the CTC teas, 7.68 lakh kgs.

In all, of the 11.09 lakh kgs, orthodox teas were only 0.67 lakh kgs. CTC teas totalled 10.42 lakh kgs.

Pak bidding

Auctioneers said that if Pakistan refrained from active bidding, as it did in the last two weeks, prices would struggle to hold firm unless upcountry buyers resorted to competitive purchases.
