Ailing ESI

It is time the authorities considered privatising the ailing ESI, which has failed to meet the expectations of the beneficiaries. Workers part with sizeable amounts as monthly deductions from their earnings, with employers’ contributions added to this, but rarely derive corresponding benefits.

Inadequate medical facilities, appalling hygienic conditions, insufficient stock of vital drugs, coupled with nepotism and red-tapism rampant in its management, have all contributed to the current sickness in the ESI system. It is time for the government to intervene and privatise the whole employees health insurance network. This will be the right remedy for all the maladies of the current ESI.
