Airlines States - West Bengal Landing system at Kolkata airport secondary runway Manish Basu Kolkata, Aug. 23 The installation of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at the secondary runway of Kolkata airport is expected to gather momentum with the Airports Authority of India considering to put in place the system temporarily before the extension of the runway takes shape. ILS, an essential bit of equipment that guides the landing of larger aircraft, was initially planned to be installed at the secondary runway only after the extension of the runway was complete. The imbroglio over the runway extension, however, had been delaying the project. “We had initially planned to locate the system keeping in view the extension of the secondary runway. But now we may decide to put up the facility temporarily at the existing southern end and relocate it further south once the extension is complete,” a senior AAI official told Business Line. While the runway is to be extended southward beyond the airport boundary, the procedure may take time as the road running from Kaikhali to Rajarhat may be diverted for the arrangement, he said. The construction of the building for ILS and the antenna raft would begin soon and the facility would be ready within three to four months, the official added. “It would help in the landing of larger aircraft like Airbus-380 on the secondary runway during maintenance work on the primary runway,” he said. Two wide-bodied aircraft, however, cannot land simultaneously on the two runways as the distance between them is less than that stipulated by the AAI. The secondary runway will also be equipped with an advanced Precision Approach Path Indicator soon, the official said. The indicator sends information to the aircraft about the correct landing angle through light beams. More Stories on : Airlines | West Bengal
