Dr Rakesh Mohan meets Chidambaram

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug 28 The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor, Dr Rakesh Mohan, on Thursday met the Union Finance Minister, Mr P Chidambaram, at the latter’s North Block office on Thursday, raising speculation that Dr Mohan will be appointed as the 22nd Governor of the country’s central bank.

The meeting assumes significance as it comes a week before the RBI Governor Dr Y. V. Reddy’s five-year stint at Mint Street comes to an end.

While Dr Mohan is in the reckoning for the top job at RBI, speculation is also rife that Dr Reddy may be offered an extension for one year in the wake of the current inflation situation in the economy and impending general elections in mid-2009. When contacted, Finance Ministry officials declined to comment on Dr Mohan’s meeting with the Finance Minister.
