Gangavaram Port to start operations in Sept

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug. 30 Gangavaram Port, which is being taken up in public-private partnership near Visakhapatnam, would be formally launched in September.

The greenfield port could handle mother vessels, boosting the shipping capacities on the East Coast. The port, however, had commenced trial operations this month.

Greenfield ports

Addressing a seminar on ‘Railways as a logistics provider in the transport sector’ here on Saturday, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, said the State was developing a number of greenfield ports, while upgrading minor ports into major ports.

He said these ports would trigger growth, with several special economic zones and industrial parks coming up along the coast. Stating that works on ports at Vodarevu, Nizampatnam and Machilipatnam were under way, he said these ports needed last mile connectivity.

The seminar was organised by the Hyderabad-based Centre for Transportation Research and Management.
