Letters Creating resources This is with reference to the article “Repaying one’s debt to society” (Business Line, August 30). It is heartening to note that the Gramin Shramik Pratishthan, a voluntary organisation founded by Harishchandra Sude at Budhoda in the Latur district of Maharashtra has made physically and visually challenged people in the region learn some skills (weaving daris from saris, naturopathy treatment, body massage, water harvesting, and so on) and earn decent income. In short, Sude, who had given up his teaching job for social work, has created productive human resources in the economy. We hear and read of rhetoric from the governments that small-scale and cottage industries will be encouraged and developed in rural areas to prevent migration of rural folk to the urban areas. But, sadly, they have not been able to achieve the expected results so far. Rural people in search of jobs go to cities and land up in some menial jobs and start living in penury. Also, some, to make a fast buck, get involved in anti-social activities that are more dangerous than poverty. But Sude’s mission (commitment to economically uplift the physically and visually challenged men and women) is a success. Actions, after all, speak louder than words. S.
