Agri Dept projects to come under social audit

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 31 All development projects being implemented by the Kerala Agriculture Department will be brought under social audit.

At a meeting of district-level officers of the department here, the Minister for Agriculture, Mr Mullakkara Ratnakaran, said that as the first step, the organic vegetable growing project in 1,000 villages in the State and the project for increasing paddy production would be subjected to social audit.

He instructed the officials that review of all the ongoing schemes for doubling of paddy production should begin in September. Besides, the distribution of green cards to paddy farmers in Palakkad district should be completed by November.

Retail shops

The meeting noted that steps had been initiated by agencies, such as the Agriculture Department, Horticorp and the State Horticulture Mission, for starting retail shops all over the State to ensure availability of vegetables during the Onam season. Horticorp will make available all vegetables to the districts.

Meanwhile, the organic vegetable cultivation programme being implemented by the department in 1,000 villages in the State has reached harvesting stage. The first phase of the programme covered 140 villages and harvesting of the produce will begin on September 3.
