Strong demand for CTCs at Kolkata tea sale

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Aug 31

Last week, the CTC teas once again met with strong demand at around last levels with selected fannings and dusts tending dearer at times. The major blender was active while there was a good support from Tata Tea and other packeteers. Western India buyers supported the liquoring categories while other internal and local buyers as well as exporters operated as usual.

Darjeeling whole leaf and fannings were irregularly around last following quality with few plainer sorts seeing a decline. Brokens were on easier trend. Traditional exporters and packeteers operated. There were some inquiries from the UK/Continent and local buyers. In the orthodox sale, the whole leaf and bolder brokens were irregularly lower while smaller brokens tended firm. Fannings were firm and at times dearer. The West Asian and CIS shippers were active. The North Indian and local buyers operated with enquiry from the major blender.

Most plantation districts reported reasonably good weather and normal green leaf intake.

INTERNATIONAL

The Mombasa market was generally firm to dearer for all sorts. The Pakistani and Egyptian packers were active while the UK and Kazakhstan showed good enquiries. The Colombo auction saw an easier market with low growns in particular declining sharply in value.
