Coonoor tea prices rise on domestic demand

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Aug 31 Prices rose Rs 3 a kg on the average at Sale No: 35 of the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) on Friday when upcountry demand was adequate to absorb the 11.09 lakh kg on offer.

Exporters were generally selective. For the third consecutive week, Pakistan purchases were subdued. “With Ramzan fast scheduled to begin next week, fresh orders are limited. Exporters are meeting commitments with the stock in hand”, an exporter told Business Line. CIS exporters bought medium grades paying up to Rs 69 a kg. Poland bought bolder grades for around Rs 65. Egypt picked up odd invoices.

Corporate Buys

Among the corporate buyers, Hindustan Unilever Ltd selected liquory sorts. Duncans Tea was strong on bold dusts. Tata Tea operated on better medium teas. “Whole leaf orthodox teas gained Rs 5-10 a kg. High-priced CTC dusts lost Rs 2. Plainers also came to a lower market by Rs 1-2. Quality orthodox dusts fetched Rs 5-8 more. Good demand prevailed on all categories of CTC dust teas. Brighter liquoring teas got Rs 2 more,” an auctioneer said.

Darmona Estate remained in Rs 100 price-category for five marks. Three of them were leaf grades – BOPF Rs 114 a kg, BP Rs 102 and another line BP Rs 100. Two were dust grades – PD Rs 106 and RD Rs 106. Homedale Estate created record when, for the first time, both its leaf and dust grades shot into Rs 100 price-band in a single auction. Its BOP and RD grades got Rs 100 each.

Green View Estate got Rs 99 a kg, Kannavarai Estate Rs 98, Highfield Estate Special and Hittakkal Estate Rs 97 each, Shanthi Premium, Deepika Supreme, Selva Ganapathy Supreme and Professor Rs 96 each, Ella Estate Rs 95, Sree Tea Supreme Rs 94, Aroma estate Rs 92 and Vigneshwar Estate Rs 91.

Among orthodox teas from corporate sector, Kodanaad and Havukal got Rs 132 each, Mailoor Rs 130, Chamraj Rs 127, Corsley Rs 117, Tiger Hill Rs 111, Curzon, Kairbetta and Kil Kotagiri Rs 110 each, Coonoor Tea Rs 109, Katary Rs 108, Glendale Rs 105, Erinkadu, Devarshola and Prammas Rs 100 each.

Quotations held by brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 58-62 a kg for plain leaf grades and Rs 75-86 for the brighter liquoring sorts. They ranged Rs 63-66 a kg for plain dust grades and Rs 80-97 for brighter liquoring sorts.
