Education States - Andhra Pradesh IIIT-H awards its first doctorate Our Bureau Hyderabad, Aug. 31 The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) held its seventh convocation on Sunday and it was a memorable one for the 10-year old institute with the award of the first Ph.D. The doctorate was awarded to Mr Million Meshesha, an Ethiopian national for this thesis on ‘Recognition and Retrieval from Documents Image Collections’. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rajeev Sangal, Director, IIIT-H said that it was the only institute in the country allowing undergraduate students to participate in the ongoing research. “The institute has a special undergraduate programme woven with a vibrant postgraduate programme wherein students have the flexibility in selecting courses and undertaking projects. The research culture reflected in the campus recruitments with the B.Tech (Hons) and MS students getting placed in all the top research companies with an average salary of Rs 7.20 lakhs per annum,” he said. The highest salary offered this year was Rs 12 lakhs per annum. Mr Sangal also said that the institute’s research exchange programme with leading groups in the world has helped students spend time at the participatory university abroad. The aim of the institute was to reach 100 Ph.D admissions per year by 2012 and thus placing it along with the leading research institutes in the world. This year III-H admitted around 125 research students taking the total number to 307 with 84 Ph.D students and 223 MS students. In his address, IIIT Chairman, Prof. Raj Reddy explained the efforts that went into creating the institute and acknowledged the support of former Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, and the current Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, in giving a shape to it. Around 250 undergraduate and postgraduate students were conferred degrees today. IIIT-H currently has over 700 undergraduate students, 250 postgraduate students and 300 postgraduate research students. The convocation address was delivered by Mr Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice-Chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions. Ms Kritika Tandon was awarded the IIIT gold medal for securing highest cumulative grade point average in the graduating class. She also shared the programme gold medal with Mr M. Kirthi Krishna. Ms Swati Jain got the medial for best all round performance while Mr Piyush Jain got the Banyan award. More Stories on : Education | Andhra Pradesh
