Trinamool team meets Bengal Governor

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Aug 31

A 16-member delegation comprising members of the Trinamool Congress and the Krishi Jami Jiban Jibika Raksha Committee, among others, met the West Bengal Governor, Mr Gopalkrishna Gandhi, on Sunday, to convey to him the initial responses of the Trinamool Congress leader, Ms Mamata Banerjee, to Mr Gandhi’s letter, which he had sent to her on Saturday.

In his letter, Mr Gandhi had urged all stakeholders in the Singur land acquisition imbroglio to consider the “social costs” of their respective positions in the matter.

He had said: “You and others of your view have been unswerving on the demand that the acquired lands of owners unwilling to part with them be returned. The House of Tata and the State Government have held their positions. Time has now come for all of us to consider the social costs of these respective positions, as different from investment costs and political implications.”

The Governor had suggested that “a person with no political or industrial affiliations” be invited to act as an unbiased intermediator in the matter.

Meanwhile, in a meeting held today to mark the food movement of 1959, the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, dismissed as “unrealistic” Ms Banerjee’s demand for the return of 400 acres of land.

He said the State Government had not acquired an inch of extra land than what was required. He urged Ms Banerjee to hold discussions in the matter “on realistic grounds and within the purview of the law of the land.”

In a separate statement, Mr Biman Bose, Chairman of the Left Front, urged Ms Banerjee to come to the negotiating table and place her demands. The Left Front today held an emergency meeting on the Singur issue. It will meet again on Tuesday to take a decision on whether to convene an all-party meeting in the matter.
