Our Bureau

Chennai, Sept. 2 The Tata group is to handle the implementation of the Fisheries Institute of Technology and Training to come up near here.

According to an official press release, the Tamil Nadu Government has entered into an agreement with the Tata group which will provide the technological support to get the fisheries institute running on land given by the State Government.

The Tata group will take this up on a non-profit basis as a part of its corporate social responsibility.

The Government has allocated 1.16 hectares land free at Muttukadu, about 25 km south of Chennai on the east coast, where the institute is to be established.

The institute is a registered society with representatives from the State and Central Government, NGOs, and the fishery industry.

The Tata group will discuss with domestic and international players in the fisheries sector to set up the fisheries institute which will train fishermen in modern fishing techniques, processing methods, and marketing and setting up fish hatcheries and culture.

The Tata group will handle the initial expenses to set up the institute and hand it over to the State Government once it takes shape, the release said.
