Trade & Labour Unions States - Andhra Pradesh Vizag steel plant unions oppose rail track to Gangavaram port Our Bureau Visakhapatnam, Sept. 2 All the unions in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant are up in arms against the laying of a rail track to the Gangavaram port and they are demanding that a flyover be constructed first to ensure the safe travel of plant workers before taking up work on the track. In a letter to the Director (Personnel), Mr Y. Manohar, the leaders of all the unions have complained that the Gangavaram port authorities are going ahead with the construction of a rail track on the Balacheruvu road, which is used by nearly 20,000 workers of the steel plant, the regular employees as well as the contract workers. “It is imperative, therefore, to construct a flyover on the road before taking up rail work and all the unions made it clear at an earlier meeting to take up work was stopped by the employees. Unfortunately, the Gangavaram port authorities are going ahead with it and the steel plant management is taking no steps to protect the interests of its employees,” the leaders of different unions complained. Condemning the attitude of the Gangavaram port authorities and the “indifference of the port management,” the unions demanded that work on the track be stopped immediately or they would have to resort to direct action by September 4. The unions pointed out that the VSP had given land to the Gangavaram port and co-operated with port authorities in construction activity and “yet the port authorities are not heeding to a reasonable demand. We cannot allow steel plant workers to travel in unsafe conditions and the construction of a rail track, without the flyover, endangers their lives.” More Stories on : Trade & Labour Unions | Railways | Andhra Pradesh
