Our Bureau New Delhi, Sept. 2 Maruti Suzuki on Tuesday said it would scale up its research and development work for small car engines from its Indian operations. This would be to foster Suzuki Motor Corporation’s plans to make the Indian subsidiary a hub for its engineering work outside Japan. Speaking at the Annual General Meeting, Maruti Suzuki Chairman Mr R.C. Bhargava said, “We target to increase the development work from India up to 90 per cent on small engines with a capacity up to 1,200 cc. The remaining would be carried out at Suzuki’s facility in Japan.” The Indian arm contributes around 30 per cent to engine development work Suzuki Motor Corporation Chairman Mr Osamu Suzuki, who is here on a three-day visit to review Maruti’s operations, had discussions with the company’s board to increase its research and development work. Mr Suzuki’s agenda during the trip would also focus on the new K-series engine, which would be equipped in its A-Star model scheduled to be launched by October. Over the next three to five years, the K-series engines will replace current engines in many other existing Maruti model. The company said that the production of the new series of engine would begin next month at its Gurgaon plant. Mr Bhargava informed shareholders that the company planned to export over 2 lakh units of A-Star by 2010-11.
