Nissan to launch 3 compact car models by 2012

Priyanka Vyas

New Delhi, Sept. 4 Nissan Motor Co plans to launch three compact car models of the overall 9 models which it would introduce in the country by 2012.

“We are looking at three small car models from our global platform which would be launched in India by 2012,” Mr Shohei Kimura, Managing Director, Nissan Motor India, told Business Line at the sidelines of the SIAM annual convention.

Mr Kimura declined to comment on the price range of its models, but indicated it would be in the premium hatchback category.

He also said that the three compact car models would be made for the first time in markets like India for Thailand as it was easy to compete in the entry level car segment.

Mr Kimura said, “We would have 9 models by 2012 out of which five models would be made in India.”

It sells 2 models – X-trail , a sports utility vehicle, and its premium car Tienna.

The company has aggressive plans in the Indian market through tie ups with domestic auto makers. Apart from its facility in Chennai from where it would produce its range of cars, the company also has a tie-up with Bajaj to launch a low-cost car and with Ashok Leyland for light commercial vehicles.

Nissan has a contract manufacturing agreement with Maruti Suzuki.
