Fiat finalising product portfolio with Tata Motors

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Sept. 4 The Fiat Group said that it was looking to strengthen its presence in the Indian small car market as the company was likely to finalise its product strategy with its joint venture partner, Tata Motors, in the next two months.

“We are looking to be an important player in the Indian small car market … Both we and Tata Motors are working on the product portfolio to be finalised in the next 60 days,” said Mr Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer, Fiat Group.

Both companies were also willing to share a common platform. “It is always a possibility. Tata Motors has 100 per cent of their products in the compact car segment. We have two-thirds of our global portfolio in the segment.”

He said he wondered about the way Nano was made. While he implied that the company could not make a car at the price point of Nano, it was certainly planning to launch a low cost car by 2010. “This would be the cheapest car in Fiat’s portfolio.”
