Events Industry & Economy - Newspapers & Publishing The Hindu Retail Plus expo kicks off shopping season Our Bureau Chennai, Sept. 4 About 80 stalls displaying a range of product categories from electronics (LCD TVs, refrigerators and ACs), to mobiles, jewellery, furniture, stabilisers, solar heaters, satellite TV service providers, kitchenware, modular kitchens, antique furniture, decorative items, induction cookers, real estate, high-end massage equipment, clubs and holidays, medicated footwear and leather goods have been put up at the first The Hindu Retail Plus exhibition that opened at the Chennai Trade Centre on Thursday. The exhibition marks the first anniversary of The Hindu Retail Plus supplement. The show hopes to make the most of the beginning of the festival shopping season, said the event organisers. The five-day exhibition was inaugurated by cine star, Ms Sandhya. Samsung, JIL Furnitures (distributors of high-end massage equipment) and Sun DTH are the co-sponsors of the exhibition. Sri Krishna Sweets is the food court partner and Aquafina, the water partner. From Thailand, PakistanThe exhibition has also drawn participation from Thailand and Pakistan. The Thai participants have three stalls displaying Swarovski crystals and semi-precious stones, silverware and decorative items, while the Pakistani participants have onyx products on display. Queried on the prospects, the silverware exhibitor from Thailand says this is the second time she has taken a stall at an exhibition in Chennai and she was looking forward to meeting clients in the city. Instyle, manufacturers of sofas, have been regulars at exhibitions and were hoping to receive a good response at the Retail Plus event as well. According to an official at the Samsung stall, LCD TVs, refrigerators and washing machines were among the fast-moving goods today and the pavilion at the event allowed the manufacturer to display a whole range of products, unlike dealers who would display only a limited range. According to officials from The Hindu’s marketing department, the show currently organised in a single hall of the trade centre could expand based on the popularity, in the way that The Hindu Lifestyle show has grown over the years. Looking aheadThe Lifestyle show is organised annually in three halls of the trade centre and features all manner of products from pins to automobiles. The Retail Plus exhibition has also given free stalls to Greenpeace, the Cancer Institute and Andhra Mahila Sabha, a voluntary organisation.
