Tea Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Tea exports breach 100-mkg mark
Our Bureau Chennai, Sept. 5 Tea exports continued to increase and topped the 100 million kg (mkg) mark up to July this year. Production too has maintained an uptrend, thus brightening the prospects for the tea industry with auction prices also looking up. Exports from January to July were 105.57 mkg against 88.86 mkg during the same period a year ago. Tea shipments from the country are looking up this year on lower crop in Kenya and the industry’s effort to market tea in countries such as Egypt. Resumption of exports to Iran has also helped. During July, exports totalled 18.16 mkg against 11.89 mkg a year ago. Besides Egypt and Iran, Kenya itself has been buying from the country to meet its export obligations, while Pakistan has also begun to buy some quantities to meet the shortage arising out of Kenyan production troubles. Production riseProduction, on the other hand, increased 16.8 mkg to 476.6 mkg during January-July. While the output has increased in Assam and other States, it has shown a decline in West Bengal.
