Hyderabad, Sept. 5

Marking its foray into the premium colour television sets segment, Godrej Appliances, an arm of the $3-billion Godrej & Boyce, has unveiled 13 models here, with a price range of Rs 6,500 to Rs 70,000.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr George Menezes, Chief Operating Officer, said the segment was largely dominated by foreign players.

Mr Kamal Nandi, Vice-President (Sales and Marketing), had pegged the colour TV industry at Rs 9,000 crore, with an estimated sales of one crore units last year. Andhra Pradesh accounted for Rs 800 crore in this.

“This is expected to grow to 1.5 crore units by 2010. The company is looking at a 10 per cent market share in the first year,” he said.

Talking on the technical attributes of the TV sets, Mr Kamal Nandi said they used iPIX (intelligent processing for image excellence) technology that reduces noise in the input signals, ensuring a clear picture quality.

The company would focus on the Southern market initially, before expanding to other parts of the country. It has tied up with a European company for manufacturing the units. Mr Kamal Nandi said the company had no immediate plans to export TV sets to other countries.

Expansion

The company has dropped enough hints that it was going to expand the basket of its electronics offerings that included mobile phones and laptops. This, however, would happen at a latter stage, the company executives said.
