Industry Associations Industry chambers eye tech upgradation Our Bureau New Delhi, Sept. 6 Industry chambers expressed their exuberance over the clearance of the nuclear deal, citing the immense business opportunities that would be opened up for domestic companies. The chambers also applauded the extent to which India would now be able to procure high-level technology to meet its burgeoning energy requirements. “Today’s development provides a platform to the international community to engage with India, especially in high-level technology trade. It will also be an opportunity for Indian manufacturers to supply spares and components to the global manufacturers of nuclear power plants,” said Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director-General, Confederation of Indian Industry, in a statement. CII reckons the NSG (Nuclear Supplies Group) clearance would create business prospects worth Rs 1,20,000 crore in the next 15 years, as about 18-20 nuclear reactors would be set up at a cost of Rs 5,000-6,000 crore each . The chamber hoped that the deal, which would enable addition of new capacity and help fulfil the target of adding 63,000 MW by 2030, gets approval from the US Congress. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry also said that the deal opens up a plethora of opportunities for the country. It said that the deal, which would allow country access to nuclear fuel from various countries such as France, Russia and Australia, would also be instrumental in attracting massive investments. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) acknowledged the effort of the Government, especially that of the UPA Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and the External Affairs Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, for showcasing their collective leadership in pursuing the deal.
