Fire at ONGC rig; operations suspended

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Sept. 6 ONGC’s contractual rig ‘Pride Pennsylvania’, while carrying out drilling operations at Mumbai High South field, encountered a mechanical malfunctioning, causing fire this afternoon. Five crew members were injured.

In a statement issued here, ONGC said that the rig, carrying out drilling operations at well No. 15 in the Western offshore field, caught fire at 1:50 p.m. “Five crew members who sustained burn injuries have been evacuated to Juhu Helibase. Fire-fighting operations immediately commenced and extinguished the fire,” the statement said.

Well closed

Drilling operations were suspended and the well has been closed. This, however, will not have any impact on the production from Mumbai High fields as it was just a well under drilling and was not producing, a company official said.

“The other 82 crew members of the rig are safe. Senior officers of ONGC have rushed to the site,” the statement said.

The rig is owned and operated by US-based offshore drilling firm Pride International.
