Approach to safety

The article “Aviation mistrust” (Business Line, August 20) expresses the view that: “The reason why safety culture in the US and the western world is so strong is because the judiciary comes down hard on infringements. The fear of lawsuits and heavy penalties keep the system and the airlines on their toes.” With respect to the author of the article, an experienced pilot, my view is that, while this may be true of the litigious US system, it is not reflective of the Commonwealth approach. The Commonwealth approach is, in my experience of the Antipodean systems, much less adversarial and more co-operative. My point is that it is culture, not regulation, that drives the approach to safety.
