We’ve learnt from Singur impasse, says Tripura CM

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Sept 8 Wiser from the unpleasantness surrounding the Tata Motors’ Nano project at Singur in West Bengal, Tripura, the other Left-ruled State, has decided not to acquire agricultural land for industrial purposes, according to its Chief Minister, Mr Manik Sarkar.

Talking to presspersons after an interactive session entitled “Investment opportunities in Tripura” with the members of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Monday, Mr Sarkar said,

“We have learnt from the ongoing impasse over land acquisition in West Bengal and have, therefore, decided to avoid acquiring agricultural land for setting up industries in our State.”

The chances of similar problems surfacing in Tripura, however, were less as Tripura’s industrial units were of a much smaller size, he observed.

“We are focusing on labour-intensive smaller projects to utilise raw materials available in the State,” the Chief Minister added.
