Economy Assocham looks to boost manufacturing growth

Our Bureau New Delhi, Sept. 8 With a slowdown in manufacturing sector, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry has recommended a series of measures to pull the growth upward to 15 per cent. Assocham has suggested reforms in infrastructure such as simplifying port operations and procedures, thereby reducing the custom clearance time. It has also sought diversification of export structure in favour of technologically advanced products requiring research and development activity. Labour reformsAssocham has recommended that labour reforms be given top priority to prevent lock outs and various other conditions in the factories that could hamper manufacturing growth. At the same time, it is of the view that labour intensive sectors and heavy engineering, machinery, transport equipment and pharmaceuticals industries, which are capable of making India a hub of global manufacturing competitiveness, should also be encouraged.
