Malaysia Airlines service to Kolkata sought

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Sept 9 Malaysia Airlines would be urged to reintroduce services between Kuala Lumpur and Kolkata, said Mr Dato Tan Seng Sung, High Commissioner of Malaysia in India, here on Tuesday.

The issue of resumption of services by the Malaysia’s national carrier came for discussion during his meeting with the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, earlier in the day, said Mr Seng Sung while addressing members of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry. It was felt that there was a need for regular air services between the two cities in view of the growing passenger traffic.

It might be recalled that Malaysia Airlines had introduced the services to and from Kolkata in 2005 and withdrew them in 2006. Regular services from Kolkata to Bangkok and Singapore only confirmed that the volume of passenger traffic on the routes was not small, he said.

Visa on arrival

The Malaysian High Commissioner felt that the recent termination of visa-on-arrival facility by Malaysia for Indian nationals, along with people of 21 other countries, would not affect tourist flow from India. Last year, nearly five lakh Indians visited Malaysia and most of them with overstaying visas. Out of the 60,000 overstaying visas issued so far, 35,000 were for Indian citizens, he said.

The meeting with the West Bengal Chief Minister also reviewed export opportunities for potato and mango from West Bengal, he said pointing out that the Chief Minister was keen on Malaysian investments in sectors like eco-tourism, construction and information technology in the State.
