Kolkata, Sept. 9

The Abhijit Group would like to enhance its presence in West Bengal and has accordingly decided on major investments in the State, according a spokesman for the group. The proposed investments, estimated to run into several thousand crore of rupees, will be made in greenfield projects as well as capacity expansion of the Group’s existing ferro alloy plant in Durgapur. The greenfield projects, as the spokesman pointed out, would include a 2 mtpa (million tonnes per an num) capacity integrated steel plant to be complete with a 1,200-MW coal-based thermal power plant in Burdwan district and a four lakh tpa ferro alloy plant along with a 200-MW power plant in East Midnapore district. The ferro alloy plant, when complete, would be the largest of its kind in the country, he said. The expansion plan of the existing ferro alloy unit at Durgapur pre-supposed capacity increase from the present 38,850 tpa to 60,000 tpa and setting up of a captive power plant, comprising a 25-MW coal-based plant and 8MW rice husk based plant, he added. —
