Telecommunications Info-Tech - Enterprise Resource Planning IT majors line up for BSNL’s Rs 500-cr deal Thomas K Thomas New Delhi, Sept. 9 IT majors including Infosys, Satyam, HCL and TCS have put in their bids for deploying ERP solutions for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. The project, expected to be valued at around Rs 500 crore, will be awarded to one of these companies based on technical and financial evaluations to be conducted by BSNL. Tuesday was the last day for submitting the bids. “The company proposes to implement Enterprise Resource Planning in BSNL. The objective of ERP system is to improve the information flow to facilitate better decision making. This would lead to overall improvement in the performance of the organisation by way of improvements in productivity, cycle time, financial performance and information transparency,” said a BSNL official. Analysts said that the project will enable BSNL to face challenges due to competition by providing effective and efficient business processes and improved operational efficiencies, besides aiding in better decision making. Other telecom players have already deployed ERP solutions. Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular are using Oracle’s platform for ERP. International players such as SAP, Baan and Oracle may be partnering with one of the Indian IT companies for the BSNL project since only Indian companies are allowed to participate in the bidding process. The scope of the contract is for design, planning, supply, installation, customisation, commissioning, training, operation and maintenance of Enterprise Resource Planning System on turnkey basis. The BSNL technical committee will now evaluate the bids after which the financial bids will be opened. The bidder with the lowest evaluated price will be considered for executing the contract. The project is likely to be implemented in 18 months after the selection of the IT firm. ERP stands for enterprise resource planning. It is essentially an integrated software solution used to manage a company’s resources such as supply chain and human resources. Business planning systems have been evolving for decades, and ERP is the current generation.
