Education States - Tamil Nadu ‘Focus on core engg, software jobs’ Our Bureau Coimbatore, Sept. 9 “Knowledge will get you your first job. From then on, effective use of the knowledge acquired would depend entirely on you,” the Chief Executive Officer of KG Group of companies, Mr Srihari Balakrishnan, said. He compared his years at college (about 18 years ago), when one struggled to get information, with the current trend and said “at the click of the mouse you are able to get all information, while we grew up at a time when communication meant just talking to one another”. “Today, knowledge is available in plenty. You can choose to take it or leave it. But much depends on how effectively you use it,” he told students at the Info Institute of Engineering at Kovilpalayam near here. He was speaking at the launch of the Business Line Club. He advised the students to be disciplined and to focus on core engineering or software engineering jobs. “Say no to BPO jobs,” he told the 600-odd listeners, comprising engineering and MCA students. Stating that most youngsters today looked for openings in software companies, he said: “Get into core engineering. Competition is intense and opportunities immense.” According to him, about 60 per cent of engineering graduates had opted for mainstream engineering jobs last year and the number is expected to go up this year. When a student questioned him about the disparity in pay package, he conceded that IT jobs attracted the talent pool package wise compared with the manufacturing industry, but “look at your value over the long term, say 10 years after you join the industry and not your first job”, he replied, adding, “Long-term growth is more important than anything else.” He reiterated that one could pursue core IT too by looking at opportunities in the hardware, software, networking and telecom space, among others. Mr D. Rajkumar, Regional General Manager, The Hindu, inaugurated the club and assured support in establishing link between the institute and the industry.
