Quality norms on imported drugs to be tightened
Our Bureau
Mumbai, Sept. 10
India will tighten quality checking measures on imported drugs and officials will be sent abroad to inspect the manufacturing sites of drugs exporters overseas, said the Drugs Controller General of India, Dr Surinder Singh, at a conference here on Wednesday.
A workforce of 72 officers including drug inspectors and technical associates will be recruited and they will be added to the office soon, said Dr Singh.
Generally there are inspectors visiting from other countries to check the quality of drugs which are exported from India, he said.
But now with effect form the first quarter of 2009, the first batch of inspectors will be sent overseas to check the quality of drugs being imported into our country, he said at a seminar on the Indian Pharma Sector organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.
His office has also written to all port officers in India, as a lot of the drugs are imported into the country under their chemical names, Dr Singh said.
We will also call all port officers next month to address the issues of importers and exporters, he added.
