E-auctions for tea

Apropos “Simultaneous re-launch of e-auctions in tea planned” (Business Line, September 10).

The Tea Board’s decision to go online at six auction centres in India is laudable.

There are several advantages in switching over to e-auction, including greater transparency and preservation of secrecy.

The buyer’s name will be made available only on striking the deal.

The bid price is sealed off, eliminating the risk of manipulation.

Timely and accurate information will be available at all times on the dealings at the auctions.

Physical presence of buyer is not a must as he can access and participate in the auction from anywhere in India.

What needs to be ensured by the Tea Board is that timely implementation of the project is crucial, without any bureaucratic delays.
