Tea Coonoor tea sales turnover rises Rs 97 cr P.S. Sundar Coonoor, Sept. 11 Producers who sold their teas through the 35 auctions held in the eight months of 2008 at the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) have earned Rs 97.28 crore more than in the same period of 2007. An analysis of the Market Reports shows that this happened as teas fetched higher price even as the volume sold increased. In all, 3.43 crore kgs were sold against 2.34 crore kgs. On an average, every kg fetched Rs 14 more to rise to Rs 59.24. Consequently, the overall earnings rose to Rs 203.19 crore from Rs 105.91 crore. This marked an increase of Rs 97.28 crore or 92 per cent. Average priceEarnings rose for both the orthodox and CTC teas. The bulk of the sale was CTC teas. Of the 3.43 crore kgs, CTC teas accounted for 3.20 crore kgs. In the same months last year, 2.14 crore kgs had been sold. Prices rose to an average of Rs 59.03 a kg from Rs 44.24. The volume of orthodox teas totalled 2.27 million kgs against 1.98 million kgs last year. Their prices rose to average Rs 62.14 a kg from Rs 56.26. Currently, prices average Rs 71 a kg – as much as Rs 30 a kg more than this time last year. The higher prices have helped better returns for the small growers. More Stories on : Tea
